No More Scrunchie Time
Last week, a prominent U.S. leader was in Cambodia to discuss women’s empowerment. What issues were discussed in Cambodia? No one knows, because the Huffington Post chose to write a story about Hillary Clinton’s fashion choices instead. According to HuffPo, Secretary Clinton “decided to whip out her favorite hair standby while in Cambodia at the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Policy Dialogue today.” That’s just plain sexist.
Yet again, Huffington Post did not recognize Secretary Clinton as a leader in global politics, but instead, decided to obsess about her hair. The article even includes photographs and vivid descriptions of her latest scrunchie and other accessories she wore that seemed to “ take inspiration from the Southeast Asian locale.” Unfortunately, there were no photos of her with the Cambodian leaders or women activists present at the dialogue, because that’s apparently much less important than the Secretary’s fashion choices.
Name It. Change It. deems this article sexist and encourages the Huffington Post to focus more on what Secretary did at the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Policy Dialogue, not what she wore.
